Overview: A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique identifier that can be assigned to a periodical article, book, report, or other content. DOIs are most commonly associated with journal articles. If you have a source that lists a DOI, it can be used to import the information for that source and create a citation quickly in NoodleTools. This is especially helpful for journal articles, since those often have a long list of authors, which can take a long time to enter by hand!

Instructions

Step 1:

Click New Source and select the appropriate form for the article. Depending on the publication medium and citation style, not every form has a DOI field, so if you do not see the DOI field on the selected form, then this feature is not available.

Step 2:

Copy the article's DOI into the DOI field. You can type it either as the full URL or just the number alone -- we'll format it correctly according to the citation style you are using.

Never use a proxied version of a DOI, like the EZproxy example below, which would be specific to the school or library where you are accessing it – it will not import successfully.

Step 3:

After you copy the DOI into the DOI field on the form, a blue Smart Import button appears. If you see a yellow suggestion, you can make the suggested change, but NoodleTools will find the source even if you do not make any changes.

Step 4:

Click Smart Import. The matching article is located and the DOI import data will appear in a pop-up window. Click the Import data button and NoodleTools will automatically fill your form with the source data.

Step 5:

Click Save to add the new citation to your source list.
